About Us

RISE Moldova is a community of investigative journalists, software engineers, and activists from Moldova and Romania, founded on March 17, 2014.

RISE Moldova investigates organized crime and maps out offshore connections, uncovers money-laundering schemes across Eastern Europe and Central Asia, corruption practices, smuggling operations, tax fraud, arms trafficking, and exposes the secret businesses of politicians.

RISE Moldova is part of an international group of investigative journalists called the Global Investigative Journalism Network (GIJN) and is a member of the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP). In 2015 and 2016, RISE acted as a Moldovan partner in the global investigations #PanamaPapers and #SwissLeaks, two projects coordinated by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists.

Iurie Sanduța

Iurie is the executive director of RISE Moldova and a member of the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP).
Specialized in cross-border investigations, Iurie previously led the investigative department at Ziarul de Garda. In recent years, he has exposed several high-level corruption schemes, uncovered criminal organizations, and mapped out connections to offshore jurisdictions.He is a co-author of the cross-border investigative projects “A Murderer’s Trail” and “The Russian Laundromat.”
In 2013, 2015, and 2016, he was honored as one of the ten best journalists in Moldova at the annual journalism gala hosted by the Independent Journalism Center while in 2014 he received the Best Investigation award from the Independent Press Association.

Vladimir Thorik

Vladimir is the Russian-language editor at RISE Moldova and a member of the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP). His field is economic and political fraud in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Previously, he worked as the editor-in-chief of the Russian-language newspaper Panorama and deputy editor-in-chief of Молдавские Ведомости, leading a team of journalists reporting from 15 cities.
In 2010 he received the Best Print Media Reporter award. In cooperation with local and international NGOs, he has conducted training courses in investigative journalism.

Nicolae Cușchevici

Nicolae is a reporter at RISE Moldova, specialized in investigations and in-depth coverage. He is the author of an investigation titled “CNSM’s Adventure: The Trade Unions’ Treasure,” which reveals how a small group of individuals gained control over all assets Moldova’s trade unions inherited after the collapse of the USSR. In 2010, the Independent Press Association named this article the best investigation of the year.
Previously, Nicolae covered topics about National Army officers who had been fined for abuse instead of being charged with inhuman and degrading treatment or torture — the story is titled “The KAKI Treatment.” He also investigated priests who enriched themselves from churchgoers’ donations.

Ion Preașca

Ion is the lead editor at MoldStreet, with focus on economics and business reporting. He worked for six years as the editor-in-chief of the magazine Energia. For nearly four years, he also worked as an editor and writer for the Moldovan edition of the Romanian newspaper Adevarul. He published several investigations on privatization of state-owned enterprises, electricity trading deals, influence peddling, and corruption cases.
He also carried out many investigations in collaboration with the OCCRP and the Investigative Journalism Center. Previously, Ion worked as a reporter for the newspapers Tara, Jurnal de Chisinau, and the weekly ECOnomist. He has twice received the Journalist of the Year award from the Independent Journalism Center.

Liliana Botnariuc

Liliana has been with RISE Moldova since September 2021, as a reporter. She worked for four years in print and online media, with Ziarul de Garda and Oameni si Kilometri.
In 2019, Liliana won first place at the international Superscrieri Awards in Romania for the reportage “Collapse” becoming the first journalist from a Moldovan newsroom to take the top position in this competition. In 2020, she won second place for her reportage “Trolleybus 21” at the Superscrieri Awards. In the same year, she also received one of the ten “apples” awarded annually by the Independent Journalism Center to the best journalists of the year, for her video reportage “Emergency People”.
Liliana is particularly interested in the fields of healthcare and justice. She believes that investigations can change systems, and well-written stories can change minds.
Education: Faculty of International Relations, Political and Administrative Sciences (FRISPA) at Moldova State University, and the School of Advanced Journalism.

Marcela Zămosteanu

Marcela has been with RISE Moldova since September 2019, as a reporter. Before that, she worked in the news media for four years, covering social-political topics. In 2018, she received honors from the Independent Press Association for gender equality press achievements. Marcela had graduated from the Journalism and Communication Faculty of the State University of Moldova in 2017, completing later a master program in public policy and European integration in Bucharest.

Mihai Munteanu

Mihai is a freelance reporter at the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and a member of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). His focus is cross-border investigations. Mihai is the lead reporter of the investigative projects “Offshore Crime Inc.”, “The Proxy Platform”, “The Russian Laundromat”, “A Murderer’s Trail”, “Cupola”, “Their Republic.” He earlier led the investigative department of the newspaper Evenimentul Zilei. Mihai also worked for the newspapers Jurnalul National and Cotidianul. In 2005, his revelations forced the chief of the Presidential Chancellery, Elena Udrea, to tender her resignation.
